Rubondo Island National Park

Why Go to Rubondo Island

Rubondo Island lies in the southwestern part of Lake Victoria, with more than 75% of its landscape covered in untouched equatorial rainforest. This remote island is a sanctuary for rare wildlife, including a resident population of chimpanzees. Asilia Africa’s boutique camp is the only accommodation within the national park, making Rubondo one of Tanzania’s most exclusive and wild safari destinations. Apart from a handful of park wardens and researchers, guests enjoy the island in near total seclusion. Experiences range from gentle forest walks discovering insects and plant life, to energetic chimpanzee treks, peaceful sunset cruises accompanied by the sounds of hippos, or quiet moments on the deck watching some of the island’s 300 bird species through binoculars.

When to Go to Rubondo Island

Rubondo enjoys a relatively stable climate year-round, with occasional tropical showers. The most popular time to visit is during the cooler, dry months from June to October. Please note that Rubondo Island Camp closes in April and May due to the long rains. From January to March, light afternoon showers bring excellent birdwatching, butterflies, and blooming flowers such as orchids and lilies, with calm mornings ideal for fishing or time on the lake. June to September offers the best conditions for chimpanzee tracking, as dry trails make walking easier and fruiting trees keep chimps in one area longer. From October to December, migratory birds arrive from Europe and Asia, and renewed rainfall brings vibrant plant life, making this period especially appealing for bird enthusiasts.
