Murchison Falls National Park, in northwestern Uganda, covers nearly 3,900 km² of savannah, woodlands, and wetlands, with the Victoria Nile carving dramatic landscapes through the park.
The park is named after its iconic feature, Murchison Falls, where the Victoria Nile forces its way through a six-metre-wide gorge and plunges into the frothy waters below. The crashing falls create a permanent mist and fill the air with the scent of damp earth and rushing water.
Beyond the falls, the park is alive with wildlife. Herds of elephants roam the grasslands, lions patrol the plains, and Rothschild’s giraffes move gracefully among acacia trees. The Nile River supports large populations of hippos and Nile crocodiles, adding to the park’s rich and diverse ecosystem.
Standing before Murchison Falls, you can feel the river’s force. Water surges through the narrow gorge, creating mist and rainbows, while the roar drowns out conversation. Viewing the falls is a must-see highlight of the park.
A boat safari upstream provides an intimate view of the falls. Along the way, spot hippos and crocodiles basking in the sun, and watch waterbuck and buffalo grazing near the riverbanks. The closer you get, the louder the roar and the more refreshing the mist.
Downstream, the Nile spreads into a marshy delta rich in birds. This area is ideal for spotting rare species like shoebill storks and enjoying the wetlands’ unique ecosystem.
The savannah grasslands offer clear views for wildlife spotting. Herds of Uganda kob, Jackson’s hartebeest, and Rothschild’s giraffes roam the plains, while lions and other predators rest in the shade, blending with the golden grasses.
Near the park, Budongo Forest offers guided chimpanzee treks. Walk through the lush forest, surrounded by primate calls, and observe chimpanzees interacting naturally, providing insight into their complex social lives.
The hike to the top is challenging but rewarding. Trails wind through rocky terrain, culminating at the summit where you can stand meters from the narrow gorge and feel the raw power of the Nile River.
