Ngorongoro Conservation Area

Why Go on a Ngorongoro Crater Safari

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area in northern Tanzania is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Africa’s most remarkable safari destinations. Around 25,000 large animals live within the 30,000-hectare Ngorongoro Crater, including lion, elephant, giraffe, and many other iconic species, making it one of Africa’s New Seven Natural Wonders. Beyond game drives, visitors can enjoy guided hikes to the rim of Olmoti Crater for sweeping views or visit Empakaai Crater, where a soda lake attracts thousands of pink flamingos.

Ngorongoro is an excellent safari destination throughout the year. For travellers looking to avoid crowds, January and May are ideal months to visit. July and August offer outstanding wildlife viewing during the dry season, although these months are also the busiest. Regardless of timing, a Ngorongoro safari delivers exceptional wildlife, dramatic scenery, and a truly unique experience.

Ngorongoro Activities

Game Drives

Experience an unforgettable game drive on the Ngorongoro Crater floor with expert and friendly guides. Travel in comfortable seven-seater safari vehicles equipped with power points and fridges, and enjoy close-up encounters with Tanzania’s iconic wildlife. Picnic lunches and thoughtful amenities make for a relaxed and immersive safari experience.

Wildlife

With wildlife naturally enclosed within the crater, sightings are frequent and diverse. Species commonly seen include lion, black rhino, zebra, buffalo, elephant, and both Thomson’s and Grant’s gazelle, all thriving on the fertile crater floor.

Predators

The high concentration of prey within the crater attracts an active predator population. Lions and leopards are often spotted moving through the grasslands and forests, ever watchful for their next hunting opportunity.

Olmoti Crater Climb

This guided hike begins at a ranger station at the base of Olmoti Crater, a short drive from camp. Following an ancient Maasai cattle path, the trail winds through forested slopes, open grasslands, and rocky outcrops. Along the way, birdlife and butterflies add to the experience, while the summit rewards hikers with sweeping views across the crater below.

Empakaai Crater Climb

Join a Ngorongoro Conservation Area ranger on a half-day hike to Empakaai Crater. Descend the crater walls to reach the soda lake, famous for its thousands of pink flamingos lining the shore. After enjoying snacks in this peaceful setting, the hike continues back up through lush forest to the crater rim.

Community & Cultural Visits

Spend time with the Maasai community in a nearby village and gain insight into their traditional way of life. Visits may include exploring local markets that support community traders or walking with herders as they guide their cattle back to their bomas in the evening.
