Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, located in southwestern Uganda, is part of the Virunga Conservation Area. Though compact at just 34 km², it is rich in biodiversity, with towering volcanoes, dense forests, and open clearings offering views into Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The park is home to mountain gorillas and golden monkeys. Forest elephants move quietly through the undergrowth, while bushbuck and duiker dart among trees. Leopards, small mammals, reptiles, and colorful butterflies also inhabit the volcanic slopes. The park’s atmosphere varies with altitude, from the humid forest floor to the cooler bamboo zones and breezy ridges above.

Reasons to Visit Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

1. Gorilla Trekking

The park’s highlight is tracking mountain gorillas. Mgahinga’s forest is less dense than Bwindi, making gorillas easier to spot. Many visitors combine treks in both parks to experience different terrains and encounter these remarkable primates twice.

2. Golden Monkey Trekking

Mgahinga is home to golden monkeys, found only in the Virunga bamboo forests. Guided treks offer lively experiences as these bright-furred primates leap overhead, rustling the leaves and creating unforgettable sightings.

3. Bird Watching

Over 180 bird species inhabit the park, including Rwenzori turacos and regal sunbirds. Early morning walks provide prime opportunities to observe these birds up close, with the forest alive with diverse calls.

4. Meet the Batwa People

Visitors can engage with the local Batwa community, indigenous forest dwellers. Learn about their culture, traditions, and survival skills, including fire-making techniques and stories of forest life.

5. Mountain Trekking

Mgahinga’s three volcanic peaks—Mount Gahinga, Mount Sabyinyo, and Mount Muhabura—offer trekking challenges for different skill levels. Gahinga is easier, Sabyinyo is rugged, and Muhabura rewards hikers with sweeping summit views across Uganda, Rwanda, and the DRC. Good fitness is recommended for the more difficult climbs.
